Sarpy County Sanitary Sewer Collection and Mapping
Sarpy County, NE
In order to monitor and maintain its sanitary sewer system, Sarpy County, Nebraska conducts annual inspections. The sewer collection system is inspected to identify and document any deficiencies. In the fall of 2007, WLA Consulting, Inc. was tasked with completing a field review and visual inspection of all sanitary outfall sewers owned by Sarpy County. The visual inspection indicated that the sewer system in general is very sound. WLA’s review indicated that no manholes were found to exhibit more than a minimal degree of corrosion from sewer gas.
WLA Consulting, Inc. has also been tasked with an on-going effort to coordinate and support the Sarpy County staff, specifically the geographic information system (GIS) staff members, in a joint partnership to collect and organize information regarding the sanitary sewer system in order to prepare a comprehensive sewer map and database for the county. Sarpy County’s sanitary sewer system is made up of approximately 88,000 linear feet of pipe and approximately 350 manholes. Prior to WLA’s field and mapping efforts, the county staff had to resort to searching through boxes of drawings in multiple offices to view a portion of the sewer. Clear information on pipe sizes or construction material was not available. Compounding the problem, the location of manholes and other landmarks had not yet been incorporated into the GIS maps. WLA is currently in the process of collecting previous engineering drawings, previous surveys, sewer plan and profile drawings and other information that is essential for map development. WLA will prepare the new sanitary sewer system maps. All map-related work will be completed in ArcGIS format, supplemented with AutoCAD format as required for details. The sewer system map will be linked to Sarpy County’s GIS system and will be able to be easily modified in the future.
